Windows 10 Home N is the European edition of Windows 10 Home: the same home operating system, but without Windows Media Player, Groove Music, Movies & TV and Microsoft’s built-in media technologies. A Windows 10 Home N key from HypestKey is a genuine retail license for one PC, in 32-bit or 64-bit, emailed instantly after payment. It is for people whose PC already runs Home N, or who want a lean Windows 10 Home and use their own media player. Regular Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; security updates continue through Microsoft’s consumer ESU program until October 12, 2027.
Key takeaways
- Genuine retail license for 1 PC, one-time purchase.
- Identical to Windows 10 Home apart from the media apps and codecs.
- The free Media Feature Pack from Microsoft adds the media components back.
- A Home N key activates Home N only, not regular Home.
- Emailed instantly after payment. Something went wrong? We’ll help you fix it.
What Is Windows 10 Home N?
Windows 10 Home N is a version of Windows 10 Home that Microsoft offers in Europe after a European Commission ruling on bundled media software. It ships without Windows Media Player, Groove Music, Movies & TV, Voice Recorder and Skype, and without Media Foundation and several audio and video codecs. Everything else matches Windows 10 Home.
The Start menu, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Defender Antivirus, virtual desktops and Windows Update are all there and work exactly as on the standard edition. What changes is the media layer. Playing an MP4 or MP3 file? Install VLC, MPC-HC or another player of your choice, or add Microsoft’s own components with the Media Feature Pack.
What Doesn’t Work Without the Media Feature Pack?
Without the Media Feature Pack, Windows 10 Home N cannot use features that depend on Microsoft’s media stack. Microsoft lists, among others, Windows Hello, webcams, voice typing, alarm sounds, wireless display, video playback in the Photos app and OneDrive, some video streaming in Microsoft Edge and some Teams audio and video calls.
| Area | Windows 10 Home | Windows 10 Home N |
|---|---|---|
| Core Windows features and updates | Yes | Yes |
| Windows Media Player, Groove Music, Movies & TV | Included | Not included |
| Media Foundation, AAC, H.264, H.265 codecs | Included | Added by the Media Feature Pack |
| Windows Hello, webcam, voice typing | Work out of the box | May need the Media Feature Pack |
| Product key | Home key | Home N key (activates Home N only) |
Microsoft keeps the full list of missing components on its page about the Media Feature Pack for Windows N. If your PC runs regular Home rather than Home N, choose the Windows 10 Home key instead.
How Do I Install the Media Feature Pack on Windows 10 N?
On Windows 10 Home N, open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Optional features, click Add a feature, find Media Feature Pack in the list and install it. Then restart the PC. Windows does not prompt for the restart, but the installation only completes after it.
- Press Windows + I and open Apps.
- Under Apps & features, click Optional features.
- Click Add a feature.
- Scroll to Media Feature Pack, select it and click Install.
- Restart Windows when the download finishes.
Tip: On a PC that never needs a webcam or Windows Hello, you can skip the pack completely and just install a third-party media player. Fewer components, fewer updates.
Is Windows 10 Home N Still Supported in 2026?
Regular support for all Windows 10 Home editions ended on October 14, 2025, with version 22H2 as the final release. Security updates continue through Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates program until October 12, 2027, for PCs that run version 22H2 with the latest updates and are enrolled in ESU.
To enroll, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Enroll now. Microsoft notes that enrollment options and timing can differ in the European Economic Area, which matters for most Home N users. In practice, the ESU screen on your PC shows which options apply to you.
What Are the System Requirements?
Windows 10 Home N needs a 1 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit, 32 GB of storage, a DirectX 9 graphics card with a WDDM 1.0 driver and an 800 x 600 display. These are Microsoft’s Windows 10 minimums. TPM 2.0 is not required, unlike Windows 11.
| Component | Microsoft minimum | Comfortable in daily use |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster | Dual-core 2 GHz or better |
| Memory | 1 GB (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit) | 4 to 8 GB |
| Storage | 32 GB or larger | SSD, 128 GB or more |
| Graphics | DirectX 9 with WDDM 1.0 driver | DirectX 10 or newer |
| Display | 800 x 600 | 1280 x 720 or higher |
Computers from roughly the last ten years usually meet these values. Coming from Windows 7 or 8.1 on the same machine? The hardware typically handles Windows 10 without trouble; check for Windows 10 drivers for unusual devices such as old scanners.
How Do I Install and Activate Windows 10 Home N?
To activate Windows 10 Home N, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation, click Change product key, enter the 25-character key and click Next. Windows confirms with “Windows is activated” within seconds. On a new PC, install Windows 10 from Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool first and pick the Home N edition during setup.
Fresh installation:
- Download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft’s Download Windows 10 page.
- Create a USB installer (8 GB or larger, it will be erased).
- Boot from the USB drive and choose Custom: Install Windows only.
- Enter your Home N key when asked, or skip and activate later; setup then installs the matching edition.
Activation in Settings:
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Click Change product key.
- Enter the key and click Next, then Activate.
Activation from the command line: right-click Start, open Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), run slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX, then slmgr /ato. Afterwards the Activation page should read “Windows is activated with a digital license”. If you see an error code, our Windows 10 activation guide walks through the common fixes.
Home N or Pro N: Which One Do You Need?
Home N fits personal and family PCs. Pro N adds BitLocker, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V, Group Policy and domain join, again without the media apps. If you work on a company network or want full disk encryption with management tools, choose Pro N; for everything else Home N is the economical option.
Need those business features? See the Windows 10 Pro N key. You can also upgrade Home N to Pro N later by entering a Pro N key in Settings, without reinstalling.
Can I Transfer the License to Another PC?
Yes. This is a retail license, so it can move to another PC once it is no longer active on the old one. Remove Windows from the old machine or change its key, then enter your Home N key on the new PC. It covers one PC at a time.
Reinstalling on the same PC normally needs no key, because Windows keeps a digital license for that hardware and activates by itself once online.
