Windows 10 Pro is the business edition of Windows 10: everything in Home, plus BitLocker encryption, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V, Group Policy and domain join. A Windows 10 Pro key from HypestKey is a genuine retail license for one PC, in 32-bit or 64-bit and any language. It suits remote workers, freelancers and small offices whose hardware or software still needs Windows 10, and anyone who wants Pro now with a free route to Windows 11 Pro later.

Key takeaways

  • Retail license for 1 PC, transferable to a new computer.
  • Pro tools: BitLocker, Remote Desktop host, Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, Group Policy, domain join.
  • Regular Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; security updates continue through Microsoft’s paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.
  • On Windows 11 compatible hardware, a Windows 10 Pro license upgrades to Windows 11 Pro at no extra cost.

What is Windows 10 Pro, and who is it for?

Windows 10 Pro is the Windows 10 edition built for work. It adds drive encryption, remote access to your PC, virtual machines and central management on top of the Home edition. People who work from home, run a small business network or test software in virtual machines use Pro; people who only browse, stream and game rarely need it.

Working remotely from a laptop? Think about what happens when it is left on a train. With BitLocker, the drive is unreadable without your sign-in or recovery key. Home has no BitLocker management, Pro does.

Running an office of five people? Pro joins a Windows Server domain or Microsoft Entra ID, so one person can set password rules, updates and shared printers for everyone. That alone usually decides the edition for a small business.

Windows 10 Pro features and benefits

Windows 10 Pro includes BitLocker drive encryption, Remote Desktop host, Hyper-V virtual machines, Windows Sandbox, the Local Group Policy Editor, domain and Microsoft Entra ID join, Assigned Access kiosk mode and Windows Update for Business controls. None of these exist in Windows 10 Home, which can only connect to other PCs as a Remote Desktop client.

  • Remote Desktop host: connect to your office PC from home, from another Windows PC, a Mac or a phone, with the Microsoft Remote Desktop app.
  • Hyper-V: run full virtual machines on 64-bit Windows 10 Pro with a CPU that supports SLAT and virtualization turned on in firmware.
  • Windows Sandbox: open a suspicious file in a throwaway desktop that disappears when you close it.
  • Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc): fine control over updates, USB storage, sign-in and hundreds of other settings.
  • Domain join and Microsoft Entra join: connect to a company network or cloud directory for single sign-on.
  • Windows Update for Business: defer feature and quality updates so a restart never interrupts a client call.
  • Assigned Access: lock a device to one app for a reception desk or shop counter.

Pause, plan, then install. With Pro, updates fit your schedule rather than the other way round.

How does Windows 10 Pro protect business data?

Windows 10 Pro protects data with BitLocker full-disk encryption, BitLocker To Go for USB drives, Secure Boot and Trusted Boot against startup malware, and the built-in Microsoft Defender Antivirus and firewall. Together they keep files unreadable on a stolen device and block most common threats without extra software.

BitLocker is the main reason many people pick Pro. Turn it on in Control Panel > System and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption, save the recovery key to a safe place, and the whole system drive is encrypted with AES. Lose the laptop, and the data stays private.

BitLocker To Go does the same for USB sticks and external disks. Handing a client a drive with contracts on it? Encrypt it first, share the password by phone.

Secure Boot and Trusted Boot check every component that loads at startup, so a rootkit cannot quietly slip in before Windows. Microsoft Defender Antivirus runs in every edition, but in Pro you also get Group Policy control over it, which helps when several PCs must share one security setup.

Note: Credential Guard and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint are not part of Windows 10 Pro. Credential Guard belongs to Enterprise and Education, and Defender for Endpoint is a separate Microsoft subscription.

Windows 10 Pro vs Windows 10 Home

Windows 10 Pro adds BitLocker, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, Group Policy, domain join and update deferral to everything Windows 10 Home has. Home covers browsing, Office, gaming and media. Choose Pro if you work remotely, encrypt data, run virtual machines or manage several PCs; choose Home for a personal PC.

Feature Windows 10 Pro Windows 10 Home
BitLocker and BitLocker To Go Yes No (device encryption only on some PCs)
Remote Desktop host Yes Client only
Hyper-V Yes No
Windows Sandbox Yes No
Group Policy Editor Yes No
Domain join Yes No

Is Windows 10 Pro still supported in 2026?

Regular support for Windows 10 Pro ended on October 14, 2025, with version 22H2 as the final release. Windows 10 keeps working and activating, and security updates continue for PCs enrolled in Microsoft’s paid Extended Security Updates program: one extra year for home users, up to three years for organizations.

ESU requires Windows 10 version 22H2, so update an older build before you enroll. Source: Microsoft Learn, Extended Security Updates program for Windows 10.

The other path is Windows 11. If your PC meets the Windows 11 requirements (TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, a supported CPU), a Windows 10 Pro license upgrades to Windows 11 Pro for free through Windows Update. Buying for a brand new machine? A Windows 11 Pro key is the more direct choice.

Windows 10 Pro system requirements

Windows 10 Pro needs a 1 GHz or faster processor, 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit, a 32 GB or larger disk, a DirectX 9 graphics card with a WDDM 1.0 driver and an 800 x 600 display. For comfortable daily work, 8 GB of RAM and an SSD help a lot.

Component Minimum (source: Microsoft)
Processor 1 GHz or faster processor or SoC
Memory 1 GB (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Storage 32 GB or larger
Graphics DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver
Display 800 x 600
Hyper-V 64-bit CPU with SLAT, 4 GB RAM

Both 32-bit and 64-bit editions are supported by this key. Pick 64-bit on any PC with more than 4 GB of RAM; 32-bit Windows cannot use the rest.

How do I install Windows 10 Pro?

Install Windows 10 Pro from a USB stick made with Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool: boot from the stick, choose Custom install, select the drive, and enter your Windows 10 Pro key when setup asks. A clean install takes about 20 to 40 minutes on an SSD. Back up your files before you start.

Clean installation:

  1. Back up your files to an external drive or cloud storage.
  2. Download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft and create installation media on a USB drive of 8 GB or more.
  3. Restart the PC and open the boot menu (often F12, F11, Esc or F8, depending on the maker).
  4. Boot from the USB drive, choose your language and select Install now.
  5. Enter your Windows 10 Pro key, or select I don’t have a product key to enter it after setup.
  6. Choose Windows 10 Pro if setup asks for the edition, accept the license terms and select Custom: Install Windows only.
  7. Pick the target drive and let setup finish; the PC restarts several times.

Upgrade in place from Windows 7 or 8.1:

  1. Back up your files and install all pending Windows updates.
  2. Run the Media Creation Tool and choose Upgrade this PC now.
  3. Keep personal files and apps when asked.
  4. Enter your Windows 10 Pro key when prompted and let the upgrade run.

How do I activate Windows 10 Pro with a product key?

Open Settings, then Update & Security, Activation, select Change product key, paste your 25-character Windows 10 Pro key and click Next. Windows checks the key with Microsoft and activates in under a minute. On Windows 10 Home, the same steps upgrade the PC to Pro without reinstalling.

  1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security > Activation.
  3. Select Change product key.
  4. Enter the key from your email and select Next, then Activate.
  5. Command line option: open Command Prompt as administrator and run slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX, then slmgr /ato.
  6. Check the result with slmgr /xpr; it should say the machine is permanently activated.

Can I move my Windows 10 Pro license to a new PC?

Yes. This Windows 10 Pro key is a retail license, so it can move to a new computer as long as it is active on only one PC at a time. Remove it from the old PC, then activate the new one with the same key. If online activation refuses, the Activation Troubleshooter or phone activation finishes the transfer.

  1. On the old PC, open Command Prompt as administrator and run slmgr /upk, then slmgr /cpky.
  2. On the new PC, enter the key in Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key.
  3. If activation fails, run Troubleshoot on the Activation page and choose I changed hardware on this device recently (needs a Microsoft account), or run slui 4 for phone activation.
