Windows 11 Pro for Workstations is the top desktop edition of Windows 11 Pro, built for PCs with server-class hardware: dual or quad Xeon and Threadripper Pro boards, very large RAM pools, NVMe arrays and RDMA network cards. A Windows 11 Pro for Workstations key from HypestKey activates that edition on one PC. It suits video editors, 3D artists, engineers, data scientists and developers who run many virtual machines. If your PC is a normal desktop or laptop, plain Windows 11 Pro does the same job.

Key takeaways

  • Up to 6 TB of RAM and 4 physical CPUs, against 2 TB and 2 CPUs in Windows 11 Pro.
  • Adds ReFS data volumes, SMB Direct (RDMA file sharing) and NVDIMM-N persistent memory support.
  • Everything from Pro is included: BitLocker, Hyper-V, Remote Desktop host, Group Policy, Windows Sandbox.
  • Same Windows 11 hardware baseline: 64-bit CPU, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, TPM 2.0, UEFI with Secure Boot.
  • Key emailed instantly after payment, no account needed.

What is Windows 11 Pro for Workstations?

Windows 11 Pro for Workstations is a Windows 11 edition that keeps every Pro feature and raises the hardware limits for workstation PCs. Microsoft lists a 6 TB physical memory limit for it, three times the 2 TB of Windows 11 Pro, and it runs on machines with up to four physical processors. It is still the desktop Windows you know, not Windows Server.

Three features set it apart. ReFS (Resilient File System) checks data integrity and repairs corrupted files from a mirrored copy in Storage Spaces, which protects long renders and big project folders. SMB Direct moves files over network adapters with RDMA, so transfers to a file server use little CPU time. NVDIMM-N support lets the system use persistent memory modules that keep their contents through a power loss. Memory limits come from Microsoft’s Memory Limits for Windows releases page.

Windows 11 Pro for Workstations vs Pro vs Home: what is the difference?

Windows 11 Home supports 128 GB of RAM and one CPU socket, Windows 11 Pro supports 2 TB and two sockets, and Windows 11 Pro for Workstations supports 6 TB and four sockets. Only the Workstations edition (and Enterprise) adds ReFS data volumes, SMB Direct and persistent memory. Business tools such as BitLocker and Hyper-V are in both Pro editions.

Feature Home Pro Pro for Workstations
Maximum RAM (x64) 128 GB 2 TB 6 TB
Physical CPUs (sockets) 1 2 4
Create ReFS data volumes No (Dev Drive only) No (Dev Drive only) Yes
SMB Direct (RDMA) No No Yes
NVDIMM-N persistent memory No No Yes
BitLocker No (device encryption only) Yes Yes
Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox No Yes Yes
Remote Desktop host No Yes Yes
Group Policy and domain join No Yes Yes

Need only BitLocker, Hyper-V and Remote Desktop on a single-socket PC? The Windows 11 Pro key covers that. For managed company fleets with Windows Enterprise policies, see the Windows 11 Enterprise key.

Who needs Windows 11 Pro for Workstations?

Windows 11 Pro for Workstations is for people whose hardware or storage goes past what Pro handles: more than two CPU sockets, more than 2 TB of RAM, a 25 GbE or faster RDMA link to a file server, or ReFS mirrors for project data. On a single-socket PC with 64 or 128 GB of RAM, the extra features rarely change anything.

Typical cases where the edition earns its place:

  • Video post-production. 8K timelines in DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro on a dual-socket workstation, with media pulled from a NAS over SMB Direct.
  • 3D, VFX and CAD. Large scenes in Maya, Cinema 4D or Blender, and big assemblies in SolidWorks or Revit, on machines with hundreds of gigabytes of RAM.
  • Simulation and data work. ANSYS, MATLAB or in-memory data sets that need four sockets or more than 2 TB of memory.
  • Virtualization labs. Many Hyper-V virtual machines on one host, with storage on resilient ReFS mirrors.

Not sure your board or memory kit needs it? Look at the socket count and the installed RAM in Task Manager under Performance. One socket and less than 2 TB means Pro is enough.

Windows 11 Pro for Workstations system requirements

Windows 11 Pro for Workstations has the same minimum requirements as every Windows 11 edition: a 64-bit processor at 1 GHz or faster with two or more cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot, TPM 2.0 and a DirectX 12 graphics card with a WDDM 2.0 driver. There is no 32-bit version of Windows 11.

Component Minimum (Microsoft)
Processor 1 GHz or faster, 2 or more cores, compatible 64-bit CPU or SoC
Memory 4 GB RAM
Storage 64 GB or larger
Firmware UEFI, Secure Boot capable
Security chip TPM version 2.0
Graphics DirectX 12 or later, WDDM 2.0 driver
Display 720p, larger than 9 inches, 8 bits per color channel

The workstation features switch on only with matching hardware. Without RDMA network cards, SMB Direct stays idle; without NVDIMM-N modules, persistent memory does nothing. Everything else runs normally on standard hardware. Source: Microsoft Windows 11 specifications. A deeper walk through every requirement is in our Windows 11 requirements guide.

How do I activate a Windows 11 Pro for Workstations key?

Already running Windows 11 Pro or Home? Open Settings > System > Activation > Change product key and enter the Windows 11 Pro for Workstations key. Microsoft supports this edition upgrade without reinstalling: from Pro it applies without a restart, from Home it finishes after one restart. On a clean install, enter the key during setup instead.

Upgrade an existing installation:

  1. Press Win + R, type ms-settings:activation and press Enter (or go to Settings > System > Activation).
  2. Select Change product key.
  3. Type the 25-character key from your HypestKey email and select Next.
  4. Confirm the edition change. Windows switches to Pro for Workstations and activates online.
  5. Check the result: the Activation page should read “Windows is activated with a digital license” or “with a product key”.

Clean install on a new or rebuilt PC:

  1. Download the Windows 11 media from Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page and create a USB stick with the Media Creation Tool (8 GB or larger).
  2. Boot the PC from the USB stick (the boot menu key is usually F8, F11 or F12).
  3. When setup asks for a product key, enter your Windows 11 Pro for Workstations key; setup then installs the matching edition.
  4. Finish setup and connect to the internet. Activation completes on its own within a few minutes.

Tip: Command line fans can run changepk.exe /ProductKey XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX from an elevated prompt for the same edition upgrade. If activation shows an error code, our Windows 11 activation error guide explains the common ones.

Can I move the license to a new PC later?

Whether a Windows license can move depends on its license type: Microsoft’s retail terms let you transfer a retail license to another PC once it is removed from the old one, while an OEM license stays with the first device. On the new PC, enter the key in Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.

When you replace the motherboard or move to a new build, link the license to your Microsoft account before the change. Then, on the new hardware, open the Activation page, select Troubleshoot and choose “I changed hardware on this device recently”. Questions about your exact key? Ask us before you rebuild, and we will tell you what applies.

How long is Windows 11 Pro for Workstations supported?

Windows 11 Pro for Workstations follows Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle Policy, the same as Home and Pro. Each yearly feature update gets 24 months of security and quality updates; version 25H2, for example, is serviced until October 12, 2027. Installing each new feature update keeps the PC supported with no extra cost and no new key.

FAQ

Can I upgrade Windows 11 Home or Pro with this key?

Yes. Open Settings > System > Activation > Change product key and enter the key. Microsoft supports both upgrades without reinstalling: from Pro it applies without a restart, from Home it needs one restart.

Will Windows 11 Pro for Workstations run on a normal PC?

Yes. It installs on any PC that meets the Windows 11 requirements, and all Pro features work. The extra features such as SMB Direct or persistent memory only do something when the matching hardware is present.

How much RAM and how many CPUs does it support?

Microsoft lists a 6 TB physical memory limit for Windows 11 Pro for Workstations, against 2 TB for Pro and 128 GB for Home. It supports up to four physical processors, while Pro supports two.

Is there a 32-bit version?

No. Windows 11 exists only for 64-bit x64 and ARM64 processors. A 32-bit PC cannot run any Windows 11 edition.

Can I move the license to a new PC?

That depends on the license type: a retail license may move to another PC once it is removed from the old one, an OEM license stays with the first device. Link the license to your Microsoft account before a hardware change and use the Activation troubleshooter afterwards.

Is it a subscription?

No. It is a one-time purchase with no expiration date. Feature updates such as the yearly Windows 11 releases install for free on the same license.

Something went wrong with activation?

We will help you fix it. Email support@hypestkey.com or use the live chat with your order number and a screenshot of the Activation page, and we fix it or send a replacement key.
