Looking for a Windows 11 Home N activation key? Windows 11 Home N is the European edition of Windows 11 Home: the same Start menu, taskbar, security and updates, but without Windows Media Player and the built-in media apps and codecs. A Windows 11 Home N key from HypestKey is a genuine retail license for one PC, 64-bit, emailed instantly after payment. It suits home users in Europe who already run VLC, Spotify or another player, and anyone reinstalling a PC that shipped with Home N. If you never open Windows Media Player, you will hardly notice the difference.
Key takeaways
- Genuine retail license for 1 PC, one-time purchase, all languages.
- All Windows 11 Home features; only the media apps and media codecs are left out.
- 64-bit only: Windows 11 has no 32-bit version.
- The free Media Feature Pack from Microsoft adds the media components back in a few minutes.
- Emailed instantly after payment. Something went wrong? We’ll help you fix it.
What is Windows 11 Home N?
Windows 11 Home N is a version of Windows 11 Home that Microsoft sells in Europe after a European Commission ruling on bundled media software. It contains every Home feature but ships without Windows Media Player, the media apps such as Movies & TV and Voice Recorder, and Microsoft’s media playback technologies and codecs. Everything else works like regular Home.
So what is the N? It marks the edition required by the EU decision, sold “not with” the bundled media player. Same Start menu, same taskbar, same Settings app. Your PC won’t behave any differently in daily work, browsing or gaming. YouTube runs in the browser, Spotify and Apple Music run their own apps, and VLC plays almost any video file without help from Windows.
What is missing in Home N, and what still works?
Home N leaves out Windows Media Player, Movies & TV, Voice Recorder and the media components behind them: Media Foundation, Windows Media DRM and codecs such as AAC, H.264 and H.265. Without them, some features that depend on media may not work fully, including webcam apps, Windows Hello face sign-in, Live captions and video playback in Photos.
| Area | Windows 11 Home | Windows 11 Home N |
|---|---|---|
| Start menu, Snap layouts, widgets, Microsoft Store | Yes | Yes |
| Microsoft Defender, SmartScreen, device encryption | Yes | Yes |
| Windows Update and feature updates | Yes | Yes |
| Windows Media Player, Movies & TV, Voice Recorder | Included | Not included |
| Media Foundation and media codecs | Included | Added by the Media Feature Pack |
| Windows Hello face sign-in, webcam apps | Work out of the box | May need the Media Feature Pack |
| Key type | Home key | Home N key (activates Home N only) |
Want the media apps out of the box? The regular Windows 11 Home key includes them. Need business tools as well? See Windows 11 Pro N.
How do I add the Media Feature Pack to Windows 11 Home N?
Open Start > Settings > Apps > Optional features, select View features next to Add an optional feature, tick Media Feature Pack and install it. Restart the PC afterwards. The pack is free from Microsoft and restores Windows Media Player, the media codecs and the components that webcams and Windows Hello rely on.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Optional features.
- Next to Add an optional feature, click View features.
- Search for Media Feature Pack, tick it, click Next and then Add.
- Restart Windows when the install finishes.
Microsoft’s page on the Media Feature Pack for Windows N lists every component the N editions leave out. Only want to watch videos? Installing VLC or another player from the Microsoft Store is often enough, and it takes about a minute.
What do you get with Windows 11 itself?
Windows 11 Home N brings the full Windows 11 experience: the centered Start menu and taskbar, Snap layouts for arranging windows, widgets, virtual desktops, the Microsoft Store with desktop apps, DirectStorage support for games and Microsoft Defender antivirus built in. Feature updates arrive through Windows Update for as long as your version is supported.
First impression after Windows 10? Everything looks rounder, and the Start button sits in the center. It took me a while to stop reaching for the left corner. Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors moves it back if you hate it.
Security is the bigger change. Microsoft requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot for Windows 11, which is why the installer refuses some older PCs. In return, device encryption protects the drive on supported hardware, so a thief who pulls the SSD cannot read your files. SmartScreen warns before you run a suspicious download. Sometimes it is overly cautious about legitimate programs, and you can override it. Back in the Windows 7 days everyone installed a paid antivirus first; for most home users Defender now covers it.
What are the system requirements for Windows 11 Home N?
Windows 11 Home N needs a compatible 64-bit processor with at least 2 cores at 1 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI with Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, a DirectX 12 graphics card with a WDDM 2.0 driver and a 720p display larger than 9 inches. Home editions also need internet and a Microsoft account during setup.
| Component | Minimum (Microsoft) |
|---|---|
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster, 2 or more cores, compatible 64-bit CPU or SoC |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM |
| Storage | 64 GB or larger |
| Firmware | UEFI, Secure Boot capable |
| Security chip | TPM 2.0 |
| Graphics | DirectX 12 or later, WDDM 2.0 driver |
| Display | 720p, larger than 9 inches diagonally |
| Setup | Internet connection and Microsoft account (Home editions) |
4 GB works, but 8 GB feels much better with a browser and a few apps open. TPM is what blocks most older machines, and many PCs have the chip turned off in the BIOS. Type tpm.msc in Windows search: if it shows Specification Version 2.0, you are fine. Microsoft’s free PC Health Check app checks everything at once, and our guide to Windows 11 requirements explains each line.
How do I install and activate a Windows 11 Home N key?
On a PC that already runs Windows 11 Home N, open Settings > System > Activation, choose Change product key and type the 25-character key. For a new install, download Windows 11 from Microsoft, create a USB stick with at least 8 GB, boot from it and enter the key when setup asks, or later in Settings.
- Download the Windows 11 installation media from Microsoft and create a bootable USB drive of 8 GB or more.
- Boot from the USB stick and pick Windows 11 Home N, or enter the key so setup selects the edition.
- Choose Custom for a clean install, or run setup from Windows 10 Home N to upgrade and keep files and apps.
- Connect to the internet and sign in with your Microsoft account when setup asks.
- Check Settings > System > Activation: it should say “Windows is activated”.
Clicked “I don’t have a product key” during setup? No problem: add it afterwards in Settings. Prefer a terminal? Run slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX and then slmgr /ato in Terminal (Admin). Error code on screen? Our guide to fixing Windows 11 activation errors covers the common ones.
Tip: A Home N key does not activate regular Windows 11 Home, and a Home key does not activate Home N. If activation fails with an edition mismatch, check Settings > System > About first.
How does the Windows 11 Home N license work?
This is a retail license for one PC, paid once with no subscription and no yearly fee. You can reinstall Windows as often as you like on the same PC, and Microsoft keeps a digital license for that hardware. A retail license can move to a new computer once Windows on the old PC is removed.
RAM upgrades, a new graphics card or a bigger SSD do not affect activation. A motherboard swap can: then sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the license and run the Activation troubleshooter, and Windows usually reactivates. Windows 11 version 25H2 Home is supported until October 12, 2027, and newer feature updates keep the license current.
Home N or Pro: which one do you need?
Choose Home N if you use the PC for browsing, office work, school, streaming and games. Pro adds BitLocker management, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V, Group Policy and joining a company domain, tools that IT admins and businesses actually need. If those terms mean nothing to you, Home N covers everything you will throw at it.
Changing your mind later is easy: a Pro N key entered in Settings > System > Activation upgrades Home N to Pro N in place, with your files and apps kept.

FAQ
Is it a lifetime license?
Yes. It is a one-time purchase with no subscription and no expiration date.
What is missing in Windows 11 Home N?
Windows Media Player, Movies & TV, Voice Recorder and the media codecs and components behind them. Security, updates and every other Home feature are the same. The free Media Feature Pack adds the media parts back.
Will a Home N key activate regular Windows 11 Home?
No. N keys activate N editions only. If your PC runs regular Home, you need a Windows 11 Home key or a clean install of Home N.
Can I upgrade from Windows 10 Home N?
Yes, if the PC meets the Windows 11 requirements: TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and a supported CPU. Run Microsoft's PC Health Check app first; the upgrade keeps your files and apps.
Do I need a Microsoft account?
For setting up Home editions, yes: Windows 11 Home needs internet and a Microsoft account during setup. After that the PC works offline, and internet is only needed for updates.
Can I move the license to a new PC?
Yes. It is a retail license, so you can transfer it once Windows on the old PC is removed or deactivated. It works on one PC at a time.
