Are These Windows 10 and Windows 11 Keys Free Forever?
Let’s clear something up before you scroll to the tables. The keys on this page are installation keys, not permanent activation keys. The KMS keys come directly from Microsoft’s official documentation, and the RTM keys are the standard generic setup keys Microsoft ships with Windows installation media.
These keys let you install Windows and pick your edition (Pro instead of Home, for example). After installation, Windows runs in evaluation mode. Updates work, apps work, games work, drivers work. You get a watermark in the corner saying “Activate Windows” and personalization settings like wallpaper and colors stay locked.
Keys that activate Windows permanently without paying? They don’t exist legally. Sites promising “free working activation keys” sell stolen keys or run activation scripts that violate Microsoft’s terms. Those keys get blacklisted eventually.
The legal options: buy a retail key from Microsoft, get an OEM key with your PC, or purchase from authorized resellers.
Which Edition Do You Actually Need?
Most people grab Pro when Home would be fine. Others get Home and realize they needed Pro features. So here’s what matters.
Home edition handles gaming, browsing, streaming, Office work. That covers most people. No reason to spend more if that’s your use case.
Pro makes sense if you work remotely or handle sensitive data. BitLocker encrypts your drive (important if your laptop gets stolen), Remote Desktop connects you to office machines, Hyper-V runs virtual machines. Developers and IT folks usually need Pro.
Pro for Workstations is overkill unless you do video editing, 3D rendering, or machine learning on serious hardware. Supports up to 6TB RAM and server CPUs.
Students should check if their school gives out free licenses through Azure Dev Tools first. Many universities do.
Free Windows 11 Keys
Here are all free Windows 11 keys for every edition. Before you grab one, know that Windows 11 won’t install unless TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are turned on. Most newer PCs have these, they’re just disabled by default.
How to Turn On TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot
Got the “This PC doesn’t meet Windows 11 requirements” error? That’s almost always TPM or Secure Boot being off in BIOS.
To fix it:
- Restart your PC and mash Del or F2 or F12 to get into BIOS. Every board uses a different key so try them all or look it up for your specific motherboard
- Look for TPM settings under Security or Advanced. Intel calls it “Intel PTT”, AMD calls it “AMD fTPM”. Turn it on.
- Find Secure Boot under the Boot or Security tab. Turn it on.
- Save with F10 and reboot
Want to double-check TPM? Hit Win+R, type tpm.msc and look for version 2.0.
Older machines from 2017 and earlier may not have TPM 2.0 hardware at all, and Windows 11 also requires a supported CPU (Intel 8th gen or newer, AMD Ryzen 2000 or newer). There are registry hacks to skip these checks but you might have issues with future updates.

These RTM (Release to Manufacturing) keys are the standard generic keys Microsoft publishes. Use them during installation when the setup asks for a product key.

Windows 11 KMS Keys
KMS (Key Management Service) keys exist for corporate environments. Companies with hundreds of PCs set up their own KMS server instead of activating each machine individually.
These keys also work for regular installations. For home users, KMS and RTM keys do the same thing during setup.

Free Windows 10 Keys
Still need free Windows 10 keys instead of 11? Makes sense for a lot of machines. Windows 10 runs fine on older hardware and has better driver compatibility. Keep in mind that Microsoft ended free support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, so new PCs are better off on Windows 11 where the hardware allows it.
Windows 10 vs Windows 11: When to Use Which
11 is the better choice for almost every machine now. It still gets security updates, while Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025.
10 can still make sense when:
- Your PC lacks TPM 2.0 or a supported CPU and can’t run 11
- You run older software that might have compatibility issues on 11
- You prefer the old taskbar (Windows 11 removed the option to move it to the side)
- You’re on a slower machine where every performance gain helps
Just know that Windows 10 no longer receives free security patches. If you stay on it, look at Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program (see the FAQ below) or plan to upgrade, especially on machines that handle sensitive data.
Windows 10 Generic Keys (RTM)
Same as Windows 11. These let you install and select your edition. Microsoft publishes them for IT admins, system builders, and anyone setting up Windows before buying a license.

How to Use These Keys
- Grab the Windows ISO from Microsoft’s download page
- Make a bootable USB with Rufus or Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool
- Boot from USB, start the installer
- Paste a key from the tables when it asks
- Finish setup, you’re now in evaluation mode
After setup you’ll have an “Activate Windows” watermark in the corner. Can’t change your wallpaper or colors either. Everything else works normally though.
You can also skip the key prompt entirely during setup by clicking “I don’t have a product key”. Windows installs anyway. The advantage of entering a generic key: you get to pick your edition (Pro instead of Home) without reinstalling later.
Generic Keys vs Activation Keys
Generic keys (what’s on this page) are published by Microsoft for installation purposes. They let you set up Windows and choose an edition. They don’t activate Windows permanently. Anyone can use them. Meant for system builders, IT testing, and temporary installations.
Retail activation keys are what you buy from Microsoft, Amazon, or authorized resellers. Each key activates one PC permanently. You can transfer retail keys to new hardware if you deactivate the old machine first. At Microsoft’s own prices these run around $139 for Home and $199 for Pro, though authorized resellers are often cheaper.
OEM keys come pre-installed on Dell, HP, Lenovo machines. Locked to that specific motherboard. Can’t transfer them to new hardware. Cheapest legitimate option if you’re buying a prebuilt PC.
Volume License keys are for businesses buying multiple licenses. Managed through Microsoft’s portal. Not available to individuals.
The keys floating around sketchy websites for $15-30? Usually gray market. Volume keys resold illegally, keys from other regions, or outright stolen. They might work at first but can get blacklisted later.
What Works Without Activation?
More than you’d expect.
Works normally: Updates, Microsoft Store, all your games, drivers, every application. Daily use feels identical to activated Windows.
Doesn’t work: Personalization. No changing wallpaper, accent colors, lock screen, or themes. Plus the activation watermark in the corner.
That’s the full list. Same performance, same functionality otherwise. Just remember that Windows 10 no longer receives security updates unless you’re enrolled in ESU, regardless of activation status.
How to Activate Later
Installed with a generic key and now want to activate? Few ways to do it.
You can buy straight from Microsoft through the Settings app. Go to System, Activation, and there’s a link to the Store. Priciest option but zero hassle.
Retailers like Amazon or Best Buy sell keys too, usually cheaper than Microsoft. Newegg has them as well.
Sometimes Windows activates itself. If you’ve had Windows on that Microsoft account before, it might pick up your old digital license. Check Settings, Activation, and hit Troubleshoot to see. Also, PCs that came with Windows have OEM licenses baked into the motherboard. Windows finds those automatically during install.
Windows Edition Comparison
- Home – Covers web, Office, gaming. What most people need.
- Pro – Has BitLocker for drive encryption, Remote Desktop to connect to other PCs, and Hyper-V for VMs. Good for remote work or dev stuff.
- Education – Same as Enterprise but for schools. Students get it through their university.
- Enterprise – Full package with extra security tools. Only sold to businesses in bulk.
- Workstations – Handles server CPUs, massive RAM, ReFS file system. Overkill for normal use.
The “N” versions ship without Windows Media Player and related codecs. Created for European markets due to antitrust regulations. Grab the regular version unless you specifically need N.

Do free Windows 10/11 keys activate Windows permanently?
No. Generic keys let you install Windows and select your edition, but they don’t provide permanent activation. To fully activate, you need a genuine retail key, OEM license, or volume license. The keys on this page are installation keys only. Microsoft publishes them in their official documentation for IT and testing purposes.
How do I get a free Windows key that actually activates?
Free activation only exists in specific situations. Students can often get licenses through their school’s IT department or Azure Dev Tools for Education. Some employers provide licenses for work-from-home setups. If your PC came with Windows preinstalled, the OEM license should activate automatically when you reinstall. Beyond these cases, you have to buy a key.
Can I use Windows without activation forever?
Technically, Windows doesn’t stop working without activation. You can use an unactivated installation indefinitely. The limitations: a watermark appears in the corner, personalization settings stay locked, and you’re technically violating Microsoft’s license terms. For casual testing or temporary setups, it’s functional. For daily use, most people prefer to activate eventually.
What happens after I install Windows with a generic key?
Everything works normally. Updates come through, Store works, all your apps run. Only difference is the “Activate Windows” text in the corner and you can’t mess with wallpapers or colors. When you get a real key later just go into Settings, System, Activation and enter it there.
What is the difference between RTM and KMS keys?
Not much for regular users. RTM keys are the standard generic ones. KMS keys are meant for companies that run their own activation servers internally. Both work the same when you’re just installing Windows at home. The technical difference only matters to IT departments managing hundreds of machines.
Can I upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 with generic keys?
Nope. You need activated Windows 10 or an actual Windows 11 key to upgrade. Generic keys are only for fresh installs. Also your PC has to pass the TPM/Secure Boot check anyway or the upgrade won’t work.
Is using free Windows keys legal?
Installing Windows with generic keys is completely legal. Microsoft publishes these keys publicly for IT professionals, system builders, and testing. Running Windows without activation long-term is a gray area. Technically violates the license agreement, but Microsoft lets the system function anyway. They’d prefer you activate, obviously.
How do I switch from Home to Pro without reinstalling?
Easy. Open Settings, go to System, then Activation, click “Change product key” and put in a Pro key. Windows upgrades itself and keeps all your stuff. Works with generic Pro keys too if you just want Pro features unlocked, though you’ll still need a real key for full activation.
Why do some cheap keys online get blacklisted?
Keys sold for $15-30 on random websites typically come from volume licensing programs, were purchased in lower-priced regions and resold elsewhere, or are simply stolen. Microsoft monitors activation and can revoke keys that violate their terms. Retail keys from Microsoft or authorized sellers don’t have this risk.
Can I reuse a generic key on multiple PCs?

Can I still get security updates for Windows 10 in 2026?
Yes, but only through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. Microsoft ended standard support on October 14, 2025. For home users, consumer ESU covers eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 devices with critical and important security updates through October 13, 2026, and there’s a free enrollment route (via Windows Backup/sync or Microsoft Rewards points) as well as a paid one. Businesses can buy commercial ESU for up to three years, ending in October 2028. After your ESU coverage ends, the only long-term fix is upgrading to Windows 11 or replacing the hardware.
