The only difference is media: Pro includes Windows Media Player and the related media apps and codecs, while Pro N leaves them out. Choose Pro N if your organisation requires N editions or uses its own media software; otherwise Pro saves a step.

How do I add media playback with the Media Feature Pack?

Install the free Media Feature Pack from Windows itself: open Settings, Apps, Apps & features, Optional features, Add a feature, then pick Media Feature Pack and restart. It restores Windows Media Player and the media technologies that some apps, such as video conferencing or game launchers, expect to find.

1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
2. Go to Apps > Apps & features > Optional features.
3. Select Add a feature, find Media Feature Pack and select Install.
4. Restart the PC when the install finishes.

Tip: If an app reports a missing DLL such as mfplat.dll, the Media Feature Pack is usually the fix. Some hardware drivers may need a reinstall afterwards, as Microsoft notes.

How do I install and activate Windows 10 Pro N?

Create installation media with Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool, choose Windows 10 Pro N when setup asks for the edition, and enter the Pro N key during setup or later in Settings, Update & Security, Activation. Activation goes online once and usually takes under a minute; after that the PC stays activated offline.

1. Download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft and create a USB stick (8 GB or larger).
2. Boot from the USB, select Install now, and pick Windows 10 Pro N in the edition list.
3. Enter your key, or choose I don’t have a product key and add it after setup.
4. To activate later: Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key.
5. Command line: run slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX, then slmgr /ato in Command Prompt as administrator.

Windows 10 Pro N has the same requirements as Windows 10 Pro: a 1 GHz or faster processor, 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit, a 32 GB or larger disk, a DirectX 9 graphics card with a WDDM 1.0 driver and an 800 x 600 display. Real work needs more.

Regular support for all Windows 10 editions, including Pro N, ended on October 14, 2025, with version 22H2 as the final release. The system keeps working, and Microsoft’s paid Extended Security Updates program continues security fixes: one more year for consumers, up to three years for organisations.
