SQL Server 2022 Standard is the mid-range edition of Microsoft’s relational database for business applications, reporting and line-of-business data. A SQL Server 2022 Standard key from HypestKey is a one-time purchase that unlocks the Standard edition during setup, with a Microsoft download link. It fits small and mid-sized companies, software vendors whose apps are certified for SQL Server 2022, and teams moving off SQL Server 2012 to 2019. Microsoft ships security updates for SQL Server 2022 until January 11, 2033.

Key takeaways

  • Standard uses up to the lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores and 128 GB of buffer pool memory per instance.
  • Columnstore, In-Memory OLTP, ledger tables, TDE and backup to S3-compatible storage are all in Standard.
  • Enterprise adds full Always On availability groups, online index rebuilds and unlimited hardware.
  • Mainstream support until January 11, 2028; extended support until January 11, 2033.
  • Key emailed instantly after payment, no account needed.

What is SQL Server 2022 Standard used for?

SQL Server 2022 Standard runs production databases for ERP and accounting systems, CRM back ends, web applications, reporting and data integration. It sits between the free Express edition, which stops at 10 GB per database and 4 cores, and Enterprise, which removes hardware limits. Standard handles databases up to 524 PB on up to 24 cores.

Microsoft released SQL Server 2022 (version 16.x) on November 16, 2022. Typical jobs on Standard: nightly ETL with Integration Services, scheduled reports through Reporting Services, a line-of-business app with a few hundred users. Need more than 128 GB of cache or more than 24 cores in a single instance? That is Enterprise territory. For almost everything else, Standard does the work.

What does SQL Server 2022 Standard include?

SQL Server 2022 Standard includes the full Database Engine with T-SQL, SQL Server Agent, Integration Services, Reporting Services, Analysis Services, full-text search, PolyBase and transactional, merge and snapshot replication as publisher or subscriber. Security features such as Always Encrypted, row-level security, dynamic data masking, ledger tables and Transparent Data Encryption are included too.

Limit or feature SQL Server 2022 Standard (Microsoft)
Compute per instance Lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores
Buffer pool memory per instance 128 GB
Columnstore segment cache 32 GB
Memory-optimized data per database 32 GB
Maximum database size 524 PB
High availability Basic availability groups (2 replicas, 1 database), 2-node failover cluster, log shipping
Replication Transactional, merge and snapshot (publisher and subscriber)
Backup compression and encrypted backup Yes

Figures come from Microsoft’s editions and supported features of SQL Server 2022 page. Batch mode operations in Standard run with a degree of parallelism of 2, which matters on large analytic queries.

What is new in SQL Server 2022?

SQL Server 2022 adds Parameter Sensitive Plan optimization, ledger tables for tamper-evident data, backup and restore to S3-compatible object storage, Azure Synapse Link and the link feature for Azure SQL Managed Instance. Microsoft lists all of these as available in Standard, so you do not need Enterprise to use the headline features of this release.

  • Parameter Sensitive Plan optimization: a query that runs fast with one parameter value and slow with another now keeps several cached plans. It works at database compatibility level 160.
  • Ledger tables: every row change is cryptographically hashed, which helps with audit requirements.
  • Object storage integration: BACKUP TO URL writes directly to S3-compatible storage, handy for hybrid setups.
  • Azure Synapse Link: analytics on operational data in Azure Synapse without building your own ETL.
  • Query Store on by default for new databases, plus Query Store hints.

SQL Server 2022 Standard vs Enterprise: what is the difference?

SQL Server 2022 Standard and Enterprise share the same engine, T-SQL, columnstore, In-Memory OLTP and most security features. Enterprise lifts the 24-core and 128 GB caps and adds full Always On availability groups with readable secondaries, online index create and rebuild, Resource Governor, automatic tuning and batch mode on rowstore. Standard keeps basic availability groups.

Feature Standard 2022 Enterprise 2022
Compute per instance Lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores Operating system maximum
Buffer pool memory 128 GB Operating system maximum
Columnstore and In-Memory OLTP Yes (32 GB caps) Yes, no cap
Always On availability groups Basic only (2 replicas, 1 database) Full, up to 8 secondaries, readable
Online index create and rebuild No Yes
Resource Governor No Yes
Transparent Data Encryption Yes Yes
Peer-to-peer replication No Yes

If none of the Enterprise rows matter to you, Standard is the sensible choice. Running an older app certified only for an earlier release? The SQL Server 2019 Standard key is supported until January 8, 2030.

SQL Server 2022 system requirements

SQL Server 2022 needs an x64 processor at 1.4 GHz or faster (2.0 GHz recommended), at least 1 GB of RAM (Microsoft recommends 4 GB or more, growing with database size), 6 GB of free disk space and .NET Framework 4.7.2. Standard runs on Windows Server 2016 through 2025 and on Windows 10 1607 or later and Windows 11.

Component Minimum (Microsoft)
Processor x64, 1.4 GHz minimum, 2.0 GHz or faster recommended
Memory 1 GB minimum, 4 GB or more recommended
Disk 6 GB free on the system drive for setup
Server OS Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, 2025 (Server Core supported)
Client OS Windows 10 1607 or later, Windows 11
Framework .NET Framework 4.7.2

Put data and log files on SSDs if you can; the difference against spinning disks usually shows as soon as queries hit storage. SQL Server 2022 also runs on Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Ubuntu), where mssql-conf setup asks for the edition or key. Microsoft advises against installing SQL Server on a domain controller.

How is SQL Server 2022 Standard licensed?

Microsoft licenses SQL Server 2022 Standard in two ways: per core, or Server + CAL. Per core means licensing every physical core, or every virtual core of a VM, in two-core packs, at least four per processor or VM, with no CALs. Server + CAL means one server license plus a Client Access License for each user or device.

Which one fits? Unknown or external users, such as a public website or an API, point to per-core licensing. A fixed group of internal staff often costs less with Server + CAL, and CALs must be for SQL Server 2022 or newer. Not sure which model your setup needs? Write to us before you order and describe the server and the users.

How do I use a SQL Server 2022 Standard key during setup?

To install SQL Server 2022 Standard, run setup.exe from the Microsoft media, choose New SQL Server stand-alone installation, and enter your 25-character key on the Product Key page. The key selects the Standard edition. SQL Server has no separate online activation step, so the instance is ready when setup ends.

  1. Download the SQL Server 2022 media from the Microsoft link in your email, mount the ISO and run setup.exe as administrator.
  2. Open Installation > New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation.
  3. On the Product Key page, select Enter the product key and paste your key.
  4. Accept the license terms, then on Feature Selection tick Database Engine Services; add Full-Text Search or Integration Services if you use them.
  5. Set the service accounts and authentication mode, add yourself as administrator and finish. Then install SQL Server Management Studio separately.

Already running the Evaluation or Developer edition? Setup’s Maintenance > Edition Upgrade switches it to Standard with your key, without reinstalling. For the management tools, see our guide to SQL Server Management Studio.

Tip: Evaluation to Standard is not supported for clustered installations. On a failover cluster, install Standard directly.

Can I upgrade an older SQL Server to 2022?

Yes. Microsoft supports in-place upgrades to SQL Server 2022 Standard from SQL Server 2012 SP4, 2014 SP3, 2016 SP3, 2017 and 2019 Standard, Web, Express and Developer. Run the 2022 setup, choose Upgrade from a previous version, and databases, logins and Agent jobs move over. Older versions migrate through backup and restore.

Test on a copy first, as a rule. Databases keep their compatibility level after the upgrade, so raise it to 160 only once your app is tested; that is also what turns on Parameter Sensitive Plan optimization. Upgrades are blocked while a restart is pending, so reboot the server before you start.
