SQL Server 2017 Standard is Microsoft’s mid-tier relational database edition for production workloads on Windows or Linux, sized for small and mid-size businesses: up to 24 cores and 128 GB of buffer pool memory per instance, with Reporting Services, Integration Services and basic availability groups. This SQL Server 2017 Standard key is for teams that run an application certified on 2017 and want a genuine license for it. I have spent years as the person who gets the 2 a.m. call when a database stalls, so this page sticks to the details a DBA checks before installing.
Key takeaways
- Production edition: lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores, 128 GB buffer pool, 524 PB maximum database size.
- Runs on Windows Server 2012 to 2022, Windows 8 to 11, and on Linux and Docker.
- Extended support (security updates) runs until October 12, 2027.
- The key goes in during setup, or later through Edition Upgrade.
- Emailed instantly after payment. Something went wrong? We’ll help you fix it.
What is SQL Server 2017 Standard?
SQL Server 2017 Standard (version 14.x) is the edition Microsoft describes as balancing performance, security and affordability for businesses that need enterprise-class features without Enterprise complexity. It was released on September 29, 2017 and was the first SQL Server release to run on Linux as well as Windows, using the same database engine on both.
Who buys it in 2026? Mostly teams whose accounting, ERP, practice management or warehouse software lists SQL Server 2017 as its certified version. Vendors are strict about that. Running an uncertified version can void your support contract with the application vendor, so matching the version they name is often the cheapest path. If you are free to choose, newer versions are covered further down.
What does the Standard edition include?
SQL Server 2017 Standard includes the Database Engine, SQL Server Agent for scheduled jobs, Reporting Services, Integration Services, Analysis Services, basic R and Python integration, and high availability through log shipping, two-node failover clusters and basic availability groups. Columnstore indexes and In-Memory OLTP are available too, within Standard’s memory caps.
- Database Engine with row-level security, Always Encrypted, dynamic data masking and server and database audit.
- SQL Server Agent for backups, maintenance plans and job scheduling.
- Reporting Services for paginated reports (in 2017 it is a separate download that asks for the same product key).
- Integration Services for ETL and data movement.
- Basic availability groups: two replicas, one database per group.
- Machine Learning Services: basic R and Python integration, limited to 2 cores and in-memory data sets.
- Backup compression and encrypted backups.
Transparent data encryption (TDE) is not part of 2017 Standard; Microsoft added it to Standard only in SQL Server 2019. Need TDE for a compliance checklist? That alone is a reason to pick a newer version.
What are the Standard edition limits?
A SQL Server 2017 Standard instance uses at most the lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores, 128 GB of memory for the buffer pool, 32 GB for the columnstore segment cache and 32 GB of memory-optimized data per database. The maximum database size is 524 PB, the same as Enterprise, so storage size is not the limit.
| Capability | 2017 Standard | 2017 Enterprise |
|---|---|---|
| Compute per instance | Lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores | Operating system maximum |
| Buffer pool memory | 128 GB | Operating system maximum |
| Columnstore segment cache | 32 GB | Unlimited |
| Maximum database size | 524 PB | 524 PB |
| Availability groups | Basic (2 replicas, 1 database) | Full, up to 8 secondary replicas |
| Failover cluster nodes | 2 | 16 |
| Transparent data encryption | No | Yes |
| Online index rebuild, Resource Governor | No | Yes |
| Batch mode adaptive joins, memory grant feedback | No | Yes |
| Interleaved execution for multi-statement TVFs | Yes | Yes |
Source: Microsoft Learn, editions and supported features of SQL Server 2017. One correction to claims you may have seen elsewhere: the adaptive join and memory grant feedback parts of adaptive query processing are Enterprise features. Standard gets interleaved execution only. In practice, a single-server line-of-business database rarely gets close to 128 GB of buffer pool. Run out of memory headroom and the usual answer is better indexing long before Enterprise.
Does SQL Server 2017 Standard run on Linux?
Yes. SQL Server 2017 runs on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Ubuntu, and in Docker containers, with the same engine, T-SQL and client protocols as on Windows. Applications connect the same way, and backups taken on Windows restore on Linux. Some components, such as Reporting Services and Analysis Services, are Windows-only.
On Linux, Microsoft’s package repositories install the engine with yum, zypper or apt. Afterwards you run sudo /opt/mssql/bin/mssql-conf setup, pick the option for a retail product key, accept the license and set the SA password.
What are the system requirements on Windows?
SQL Server 2017 needs an x64 processor of at least 1.4 GHz (2.0 GHz or faster recommended), 1 GB of RAM minimum with at least 4 GB recommended, 6 GB of free disk space and .NET Framework 4.6, which setup installs. Standard runs on Windows Server 2012 through 2022 and on Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and 11.
| Component | Requirement (Microsoft) |
|---|---|
| Processor | x64, 1.4 GHz minimum, 2.0 GHz or faster recommended |
| Memory | 1 GB minimum, at least 4 GB recommended and more as data grows |
| Disk | 6 GB free on the system drive; NTFS or ReFS recommended |
| Server OS | Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016, 2019, 2022 (Server Core included) |
| Client OS | Windows 8, 8.1, 10, 11 |
| Framework | .NET Framework 4.6 (installed by setup) |
| Monitor | Super-VGA 800×600 or higher |
Details: SQL Server 2017 hardware and software requirements on Microsoft Learn. Two things trip people up. SQL Server 2017 is not supported on Windows Server 2025, and Microsoft advises against installing it on a domain controller, so give it a member server.
How do you install SQL Server 2017 Standard with your key?
Run setup.exe from Microsoft’s SQL Server 2017 installation media, choose New SQL Server stand-alone installation, select Enter the product key on the Product Key page and type the 25-character key from our email. Setup then installs Standard edition. Already running Evaluation or Developer? Use Edition Upgrade instead of reinstalling.
- Mount the SQL Server 2017 ISO (the media from Microsoft’s Evaluation Center works) and run setup.exe.
- Go to Installation > New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation.
- On Product Key, choose Enter the product key and paste the key.
- On Feature Selection, tick Database Engine Services plus whatever else you need.
- Set service accounts, collation, authentication mode and SQL Server administrators.
- Finish setup, then install the latest cumulative update and security updates.
Moving an existing Evaluation instance to Standard? Open SQL Server Installation Center, select Maintenance > Edition Upgrade and enter the key. From the command line it looks like this:
setup.exe /q /ACTION=EditionUpgrade /INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER /PID=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS
Check the result with SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('Edition');. It should return Standard Edition (64-bit). For a management console, install the free SQL Server Management Studio separately; it no longer ships inside the SQL Server setup.
Tip: Since 2017 Microsoft ships no service packs for SQL Server, only cumulative updates and security updates. Patch to the last CU before you put real data on the instance.
How long will SQL Server 2017 be supported?
Microsoft ended mainstream support for SQL Server 2017 on October 11, 2022, and extended support ends on October 12, 2027. Until then Microsoft releases security updates only, with no new features. After October 2027 the database keeps working, but it no longer receives security fixes, so plan your upgrade path now.
That leaves roughly a year of patched life from today. Fine for an application with its own retirement date or a vendor upgrade already scheduled. For a new deployment you expect to run for five years, SQL Server 2019 Standard or SQL Server 2022 Standard is the better buy, and both restore 2017 backups directly.
How does Microsoft license SQL Server Standard?
Microsoft offers SQL Server Standard under two models: per core, where every physical core of the server (minimum four per processor) is licensed and any number of users may connect, and Server plus CAL, where one server license is combined with a Client Access License for each user or device. Your key unlocks the Standard edition during setup.
The license model decides how many users or cores a deployment must cover. That is a compliance question, not a technical one: setup does not count cores or users. Not sure which model your purchase fits? Write to us before you order and we’ll tell you what this key covers.
