Microsoft Office Home and Business 2016 for Mac is the older one-time purchase Office suite for Mac users: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote under one license for one Mac, with no subscription. This Office 2016 Mac key is a global key that you redeem at setup.office.com. It suits one kind of buyer best: someone with an older Intel Mac who needs the 2016 apps specifically. Honest note up front. Microsoft ended support for Office 2016 for Mac on October 13, 2020, and a 2026 licensing change on macOS affects old builds. Read the compatibility section before you order.
Key takeaways
- Five apps: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote for Mac 2016.
- One-time purchase for one Mac at a time.
- Built for Intel Macs; on Apple Silicon it runs only through Rosetta 2.
- No security updates since October 13, 2020.
- For a supported Office on a current Mac, Office 2024 is the better choice.
Which Apps Come with Office Home and Business 2016 for Mac?
Office Home and Business 2016 for Mac includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote in their 2016 versions. Outlook is what separates it from Office Home and Student 2016, which has no email client. The license is perpetual, so the installed apps keep opening without a renewal or monthly charge.
So what do you actually get? Word for writing and editing documents. Excel when you need to crunch numbers or build spreadsheets. PowerPoint for slides, whether it’s a sales deck or a school project. Outlook for mail, calendar and contacts, and OneNote for notes and ideas you want to keep in one place.
If email management matters for your work, Outlook is the reason to pick Home and Business over Home and Student. Paying once also means no yearly renewals and no surprise charges on your card.
Does Office 2016 Work on a Current Mac?
Office 2016 for Mac was released in 2015 for Intel Macs and stopped receiving updates in October 2020. It was never updated for the macOS versions that followed, and it has no native Apple Silicon build. On an M-series Mac it needs Rosetta 2, and on recent macOS releases installer errors and crashes are possible.
| Item | Office 2016 for Mac |
|---|---|
| Processor | Intel; Apple Silicon only through Rosetta 2 |
| macOS | Released for OS X Yosemite 10.10 and later; no updates for macOS versions released after 2020 |
| Microsoft support | Ended October 13, 2020 |
| Internet | Needed to redeem the key and activate |
There is a second point. Since July 13, 2026, Microsoft’s licensing change on macOS means Office for Mac builds older than version 16.83 open files in a reduced functionality mode: viewing and printing work, editing and saving do not. Microsoft’s notice about updating Office on macOS names Office 2019 and Office 2021 for Mac and does not mention 2016 separately. Office 2016 for Mac, though, received its last update in 2020, years before build 16.83 existed. Need to edit documents? Ask our support team before you order, and we’ll tell you honestly whether this edition fits your Mac.
Note: Check your macOS version first: Apple menu > About This Mac. Knowing the version and the chip (Intel or Apple) answers most compatibility questions in a minute.
How Do I Activate an Office 2016 Mac Key?
To activate, open setup.office.com, sign in with a Microsoft account and enter the 25-character key, then pick your country and language. The license is added to that account. Install Office from your Microsoft account page, open Word and sign in with the same account, and activation completes within a minute or two.
- Go to setup.office.com and sign in with your Microsoft account (or create a free one).
- Enter the product key from your email and confirm country and language.
- Open account.microsoft.com > Services & subscriptions and choose Install next to Office Home and Business 2016 for Mac.
- Run the downloaded .pkg installer.
- Open Word, click Sign in and use the same account. Office activates.
Before installing anything, start a Time Machine backup. If the installation goes sideways, you can roll the Mac back. After Office is running, Time Machine keeps protecting your documents in the background. Don’t see an install button for this version in your account? Write to us with a screenshot and we’ll sort it out with you.
Can I Move My License to Another Mac?
Yes, one Mac at a time. Sign out of Office on the old Mac, remove the apps, then install on the new Mac from your Microsoft account and sign in. Running the same license on two Macs at once is not allowed, so finish the move before you use the second machine.
Using Outlook? Export your mailbox first: in Outlook, choose File > Export and save an .olm archive. Without that step, local mail that never synced to a server stays on the old Mac.
What About Security Updates?
Office 2016 for Mac receives no security updates. Microsoft ended support on October 13, 2020, and since then there have been no patches, bug fixes or technical support for this version. The apps that still run work as before, but any new vulnerability stays open on your Mac.
For personal documents where nothing confidential is involved, many people accept that risk. Business users who handle client data, financial details or private information should usually choose a supported version instead. Strict IT policies, as a rule, require software that still gets security patches, and Office 2016 for Mac no longer qualifies.
Office 2016 vs Office 2021 vs Office 2024 for Mac
All three Mac editions are one-time purchases with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Office 2016 and Office 2021 are both past Microsoft’s end of support, on October 13, 2020 and October 13, 2026. Office 2024 is the only one of the three that Microsoft supports, until October 9, 2029, with native Apple Silicon builds.
| Detail | Office 2016 for Mac | Office 2021 for Mac | Office 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Silicon | Rosetta 2 only | Native | Native |
| Support ends | October 13, 2020 | October 13, 2026 | October 9, 2029 |

Is Office 2016 for Mac the Right Choice for You?
Office 2016 for Mac makes sense only in a narrow case: an older Intel Mac, offline or low-risk work, and a need for the 2016 apps in particular. On a current Mac, or anywhere security updates matter, a supported perpetual version such as Office 2024 is the better and more economical long-term buy.
- You want to pay once instead of monthly.
- Your Mac is an older Intel model that you keep as it is.
- You only need the core Office apps, without new collaboration features.

FAQ
Is Office 2016 for Mac compatible with macOS Ventura or newer?
Not officially. Office 2016 for Mac stopped receiving updates in October 2020 and was never updated for later macOS releases. Installer errors or crashes are possible, so Office 2021 or Office 2024 is the safer choice on a recent Mac.
Can I still edit documents with Office 2016 for Mac in 2026?
Since July 13, 2026, Microsoft puts Office for Mac builds older than 16.83 into a view-and-print-only mode. Office 2016 for Mac never reached that build. Contact us before ordering if editing is what you need, and we'll give you a straight answer.
Can I move my license to a new Mac later?
Yes. Sign out of Office and remove it from the current Mac, then install on the new one from your Microsoft account. The license works on one Mac at a time, not both.
Will Office 2016 for Mac get any more updates?
No. Microsoft ended support on October 13, 2020. The apps run as they are, without security fixes or new features.
Does it run on an M1, M2 or newer Mac?
Only through Rosetta 2, because Office 2016 for Mac has no native Apple Silicon build. Office 2021 and Office 2024 run natively on Apple Silicon.
How do I activate the key?
Redeem it at setup.office.com with a Microsoft account, install Office from account.microsoft.com under Services & subscriptions, then open Word and sign in with the same account.
