Buying Office 2016 for Mac keys

Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac brought the Office apps to Apple computers in a form that finally looked and behaved like Mac software. It is an older release now, but it still makes sense for an Intel Mac that runs an older macOS, or for someone who needs to match an existing Office 2016 setup.
What you are getting
The edition in this category is Microsoft Office Home and Business 2016 for Mac. For Apple users it was a big update over Office for Mac 2011: Microsoft’s core apps adapted to macOS interface conventions, with the ribbon reworked to fit Mac design so you spend less time hunting for commands.
Consistency across platforms is a real benefit if you switch between Windows and macOS. Documents, workbooks and slide decks open the same way on both, and the layout of the tools is close enough that you are not relearning anything.
The apps you get

Word for anything from a simple letter to a long report with tables of contents and tracked changes.
Excel for spreadsheets, formulas, charts and data analysis.
PowerPoint for presentations that do not put people to sleep.
Outlook for keeping email, calendar and contacts under control.

Outlook for Mac deserves a special mention. It handles OLM files (the Outlook for Mac archive format) and works well with Exchange servers. If you are upgrading from Office for Mac 2011 or an even older version such as Office 2004, you will notice better speed, a cleaner visual design and more features than in those earlier releases. OneNote is not part of the 2016 suite on Mac; Microsoft offers it as a separate download.
Will it run on your Mac?
Microsoft’s requirements for Office 2016 for Mac:

macOS 10.10 (Yosemite) or newer at launch; later updates of Office 2016 required macOS 10.12 Sierra or newer
Intel processor
At least 4 GB of RAM (8 GB makes everything happier)
6 GB of available disk space
1280 x 800 screen resolution or higher

On a Mac that meets these specs you get the good parts, like Retina display support and Multi-Touch gestures. Zooming around an Excel sheet with a pinch on the trackpad is oddly satisfying.
Office 2016 for Mac was built for Intel Macs, and Microsoft never certified it for Apple Silicon. If your Mac has an M-series chip, choose Office 2021 for Mac or Office 2024 for Mac instead.
Support status
Microsoft ended support for Office 2016 for Mac on October 13, 2020. Since then there have been no security updates, bug fixes or new features. The apps keep working on a compatible Mac, but keep that in mind if the Mac handles sensitive files or connects to a company mail server.
Getting it set up
Installing Office 2016 on your Mac is simple. Once you have your license key, you download the software from Microsoft through the link in your order email, not from some random third-party site. The installer walks you through each step from download to activation.
The 2016 apps were built with cloud storage in mind. They keep a list of your recent files, so you can save a document to OneDrive, start it on your Mac and finish it on another computer without emailing files to yourself. Sharing works too: teammates can open and edit the same document, even if they are on Windows or a phone.
Why it is still worth buying
Office 2016 for Mac is mature software with a long track record. Your purchase includes:

A license that does not expire
Genuine Microsoft software, activated with Microsoft
Instant delivery to your email
Help from our team if the key does not work
Use on one Mac

The software fits naturally into macOS. Full-screen mode and high-resolution display support behave like any other Mac app.
If you are upgrading from an earlier Office version, or buying Microsoft software for an older Mac for the first time, Office 2016 covers document writing, spreadsheet analysis and email well. Just remember that Microsoft no longer updates it, so for a current Mac a newer version is the better long-term choice.
The price reflects stable, well-known software. For people who use these apps every day, consistent behaviour matters more than new features.
