Short answer: How to activate Office 2024 depends on the edition. Home and Home & Business keys are redeemed once in a Microsoft account, and the apps activate when you sign in. LTSC editions take the key in the app, under File, Account. I'd remove older versions first.
How you activate Office 2024 depends on which edition you bought. The Home editions activate through your Microsoft account. The LTSC editions take a key typed straight into the app.

Mixing the two routes is the usual reason for trouble. An LTSC key isn’t accepted on the redeem page, and a Home key can’t be typed into an LTSC install.
Find out which one you have
The name on your order tells you. If you’re not sure, the installed product does.
- Open Word and go to File, Account.
- Read the name under Product Information.
- “LTSC” in the name: the key goes into the app.
- “Home” in the name: the license lives in a Microsoft account.
How to activate Office 2024 Home editions
This is the route Microsoft describes on its page Activate Office for Windows.
- Open a browser and go to Microsoft’s setup page for product keys.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account, or create one.
- Enter the 25-character key and follow the prompts; Microsoft calls this a one-time process that adds the product to your account.
- Open the Services and subscriptions page of the account and press Install.
- Run the installer and wait for it to finish.
- Open Word and sign in with the same account when asked.
- Check File, Account; it should show the product as activated.
The address of the setup page is short enough to type.
microsoft365.com/setupFrom then on the license belongs to the account. On a reinstall you sign in and download again, with no key to type.
A new PC that came with the suite preinstalled works without a key card. Microsoft sends a digital key to that PC. You activate by signing in.
Activating Office LTSC 2024
LTSC editions are volume-licensed products. They don’t use the redeem page, and they don’t ask you to sign in.
- Remove older versions of the suite under Settings, Apps, Installed apps.
- Install the LTSC edition with the installer from your order, or with the Office Deployment Tool.
- Open Word, go to File, Account and press Change Product Key.
- Paste the key and confirm. Activation goes online and takes under a minute.

Organisations with their own activation server don’t type keys at all. Their installs find the server on the network. For a single PC, the key in the app is the way.

If Office can’t activate, Microsoft says it eventually becomes unlicensed and all editing features are disabled. You can still open and print files.

Old versions in the way
Two versions of the suite on one PC confuse activation more than anything else. The app you open may not be the one you licensed.
A trial that came with the PC counts too. Remove everything first, restart, then install the 2024 edition you bought.

- Running the licensing script in a normal prompt, not as administrator.
