Windows Server 2016 Standard with 5 Client User CALs pairs a Windows Server 2016 Standard license with five Windows Server 2016 user client access licenses. Standard is the edition for physical servers and light virtualization: on a fully licensed host it covers the host plus two Windows Server virtual machines. The five user CALs give five named people the right to use the server’s services, such as domain sign-in, shared folders and printers, from any of their devices. These Server 2016 Standard user CALs and the key come from HypestKey in one order, a fit for small offices that run or extend a 2016 network.
Key takeaways
- Windows Server 2016 Standard: Active Directory, file and print, IIS, Hyper-V, failover clustering and Remote Desktop Services.
- Five Windows Server 2016 user CALs: one person each, any number of devices per person.
- 2016 CALs cover Windows Server 2016 and earlier, not 2019, 2022 or 2025 servers.
- Extended support ends January 12, 2027, so treat this as a license for existing 2016 systems.
- Keys emailed instantly after payment, no account needed.
What is included with Windows Server 2016 Standard and 5 user CALs?
The order contains a product key that activates Windows Server 2016 Standard and five Windows Server 2016 user CALs. The key licenses the operating system on the server. Each CAL licenses one named user to access that server’s services, for example signing in to the domain or opening a shared folder, from a desktop, a laptop or a phone.
Standard is the complete Windows Server 2016 operating system without the Datacenter extras. It runs a domain controller with DNS and DHCP, file shares with Data Deduplication and Work Folders, print servers, IIS, Windows Server Backup, Hyper-V and failover clustering. The Windows Server Essentials Experience role is available too: it adds the dashboard, client backup and Remote Web Access from the Essentials edition to a Standard server.
Five user CALs match a small team: an owner, an office manager and three staff who share one server for files, sign-in and printing. Windows Server CALs are not entered into Windows, and there is no wizard for them. Keep the order email with your records as proof of license.
How do Windows Server 2016 user CALs work?
A Windows Server 2016 user CAL is the right for one named person to access Windows Server 2016 or any earlier version from any number of devices. Microsoft requires a CAL for every user or device that accesses a Standard or Datacenter server. A CAL covers its own server version and older ones, never newer versions.
| Item | User CAL (this product) | Device CAL |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | One named person | One physical device |
| Devices per license | Any number for that person | One device, any number of people |
| Best for | Staff who use several devices | Shared PCs used in shifts |
| Server versions covered by a 2016 CAL | Windows Server 2016 and earlier | Windows Server 2016 and earlier |
| Remote Desktop sessions | Not included, needs RDS CALs | Not included, needs RDS CALs |
Planning to run Remote Desktop sessions on the server? Those need RDS CALs in addition; the Windows Server 2016 Standard with RDS 50 device CALs set covers a terminal server for shared PCs. Data: Microsoft licensing documentation.
Standard or Datacenter: which Windows Server 2016 edition fits?
Choose Windows Server 2016 Standard for a physical server or a Hyper-V host with up to two Windows Server virtual machines. Choose Datacenter for hosts that run many VMs or need Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Replica or shielded VMs. Both editions take Windows Server CALs in the same way, so the five user CALs work identically.
| Feature | Windows Server 2016 Standard | Windows Server 2016 Datacenter |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Server VMs per licensed host | 2 | Unlimited |
| Hyper-V and failover clustering | Yes | Yes |
| Remote Desktop Services role | Yes | Yes |
| Storage Spaces Direct | No | Yes |
| Storage Replica | No | Yes |
| Shielded VMs (Host Guardian Hyper-V Support) | No | Yes |
| Windows Server CALs required | Yes | Yes |

What are the system requirements for Windows Server 2016 Standard?
Windows Server 2016 Standard needs a 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor with NX, DEP and Second Level Address Translation, 1 GB of RAM for Server Core or 2 GB for Desktop Experience, at least 32 GB of disk space and a 1 Gbps Ethernet adapter. Real workloads typically need several times that memory.
| Component | Minimum for Windows Server 2016 |
|---|---|
| Processor | 1.4 GHz 64-bit, x64 instruction set, NX and DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF and PrefetchW, SLAT (EPT or NPT) |
| Memory | 1 GB (Server Core), 2 GB (Desktop Experience), ECC for physical hosts |
| Disk space | 32 GB absolute minimum |
| Network | Ethernet adapter with at least 1 Gbps throughput |

How do I activate Windows Server 2016 Standard?
Enter the Standard product key in Settings or run the slmgr command, then check the activation status. If the server came from evaluation media, convert it to the full edition with DISM first. The five user CALs need no activation step; the order email is your license record for them.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key and type the Standard key.
- On Server Core, run
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXXand thenslmgr /atoin an elevated Command Prompt. - Evaluation install? Run
DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEulaand restart when prompted. - Confirm with
slmgr /dlv: the output should list the Standard edition with a licensed status. - Save the order email with your licensing records for the five user CALs.
Tip: No internet on the server? Run
slui 4to activate by phone instead.
How long is Windows Server 2016 supported?
Windows Server 2016 mainstream support ended on January 11, 2022, and extended support ends on January 12, 2027. From that date Microsoft releases no more security updates for it. The Standard license and the five user CALs remain valid because they are perpetual, yet a server without patches carries growing risk.
Who should buy 2016 now? Offices that must license an existing 2016 server, or keep an older app running for a few months while they migrate. Read our guide to Windows Server 2016 end of life before deciding. For a fresh install, the Windows Server 2025 Standard key is supported until November 14, 2034. Other 2016 options are in the Windows Server 2016 category.

FAQ
How do I activate Windows Server 2016 Standard?
Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key and type the key, or run slmgr /ipk with the key followed by slmgr /ato. For evaluation installs use DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard.
Where do I enter the five user CALs?
Nowhere. Windows Server CALs have no activation step and are not typed into Windows. The order email is your license record.
Can one user CAL cover a laptop and a desktop?
Yes. A user CAL licenses one named person on any number of devices, so a desktop, a laptop and a phone used by that person need one CAL.
Do 2016 CALs work with Windows Server 2019 or 2022?
No. Windows Server CALs give access to their own version and earlier ones. Accessing a 2019 or newer server needs CALs of that version or later.
Can I run Remote Desktop sessions with these CALs?
Not on their own. Remote Desktop sessions need RDS CALs on top of the Windows Server CALs, for example a per-device RDS CAL pack for shared PCs.
Is Windows Server 2016 still supported?
Extended support ends on January 12, 2027, and security updates stop after that date. The license stays valid, but new installs are better served by a newer version.
