Windows Server 2016 Datacenter with 5 Client User CALs combines a Windows Server 2016 Datacenter license with five Windows Server 2016 user client access licenses. Datacenter is the edition for virtualization hosts and private clouds: on a fully licensed server it covers unlimited Windows Server virtual machines. The five user CALs give five named people the right to use that server’s services, such as sign-in, file shares and printing, from any of their devices. HypestKey sells these Server 2016 Datacenter user CALs together with the key for teams that keep existing 2016 infrastructure running.
Key takeaways
- Windows Server 2016 Datacenter: every Standard role plus Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Replica, shielded VMs and the Network Controller.
- Five Windows Server 2016 user CALs: each covers one person on any number of devices.
- 2016 CALs give access to Windows Server 2016 and earlier versions, not to 2019, 2022 or 2025 servers.
- Extended support ends January 12, 2027: plan the upgrade path now.
- Keys emailed instantly after payment, no account needed.
What do you get with Windows Server 2016 Datacenter and 5 user CALs?
You receive a product key that activates Windows Server 2016 Datacenter and five Windows Server 2016 user CALs. The key licenses the server operating system. The CALs license access: each one lets a single named user connect to the server’s services, such as Active Directory sign-in, file and print sharing, from as many devices as that person uses.
Datacenter carries every Windows Server 2016 role, from Active Directory, DNS and DHCP to IIS, Hyper-V and failover clustering. On top it adds the software-defined datacenter features. Storage Spaces Direct pools local disks across cluster nodes. Storage Replica copies volumes between servers or sites, and in 2016 it exists only in Datacenter. Host Guardian Hyper-V Support runs shielded VMs, and the Network Controller manages software-defined networking. A Datacenter host also activates Windows Server guests through Automatic Virtual Machine Activation, so each VM needs no separate key.
Unlike RDS CALs, Windows Server CALs are not typed into Windows anywhere. There is no CAL activation wizard for them. Keep the order email as your proof of license, together with the server key.
How do Windows Server 2016 user CALs work?
A Windows Server 2016 user CAL is the right for one named person to access Windows Server 2016 or an earlier version, from any number of devices. Microsoft requires a CAL for every user or device that accesses a Standard or Datacenter server. CALs give access to their own version and older ones, never to newer servers.
| Item | User CAL (this product) | Device CAL |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | One named person | One physical device |
| Devices per license | Any number for that person | One device, any number of people |
| Best for | Staff with a PC, a laptop and a phone | Shared PCs used in shifts |
| Server versions covered by a 2016 CAL | Windows Server 2016 and earlier | Windows Server 2016 and earlier |
| Remote Desktop sessions | Not included, needs RDS CALs | Not included, needs RDS CALs |
Do your users work in Remote Desktop sessions on the server? Then add RDS CALs; the Windows Server 2016 Standard with RDS 50 device CALs set shows how that bundle looks. Data: Microsoft licensing documentation.
Datacenter or Standard: which Windows Server 2016 edition do I need?
Choose Windows Server 2016 Datacenter when one host runs many Windows Server virtual machines or when you need Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Replica or shielded VMs. Choose Standard for a physical server or a host with up to two Windows Server VMs. Both editions need Windows Server CALs, and both accept the same 2016 user CALs.
| Feature | Windows Server 2016 Datacenter | Windows Server 2016 Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Server VMs per licensed host | Unlimited | 2 |
| Storage Spaces Direct | Yes | No |
| Storage Replica | Yes | No |
| Host Guardian Hyper-V Support (shielded VMs) | Yes | No |
| Network Controller (SDN) | Yes | No |
| Windows Server Essentials Experience role | Yes | Yes |
| Windows Server CALs required | Yes | Yes |

What are the system requirements for Windows Server 2016 Datacenter?
Windows Server 2016 Datacenter needs a 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor with NX, DEP and Second Level Address Translation, 1 GB of RAM for Server Core or 2 GB for Desktop Experience, 32 GB of disk space and a 1 Gbps Ethernet adapter. Virtualization hosts need far more memory, sized by the VMs they run.
| Component | Minimum for Windows Server 2016 |
|---|---|
| Processor | 1.4 GHz 64-bit, x64 instruction set, NX and DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF and PrefetchW, SLAT (EPT or NPT) |
| Memory | 1 GB (Server Core), 2 GB (Desktop Experience), ECC for physical hosts |
| Disk space | 32 GB absolute minimum |
| Network | Ethernet adapter with at least 1 Gbps throughput |

How do I activate Windows Server 2016 Datacenter?
Enter the Datacenter product key in Settings or with the slmgr command, then confirm the activation status. If the server was installed from evaluation media, convert it with DISM first. The five user CALs need no activation: keep the order email as proof of license.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key and enter the Datacenter key.
- On Server Core, or if you prefer the command line, run
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXXand thenslmgr /atoin an elevated Command Prompt. - Evaluation install? Run
DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEulaand restart when asked. - Check the result with
slmgr /dlv: the output should show Datacenter and a licensed status. - File the order email with your licensing records; it documents the five user CALs.
Tip: Activation fails with a network error? Run
slui 4to start phone activation, which works on servers with no internet access.
How long is Windows Server 2016 supported?
Windows Server 2016 mainstream support ended on January 11, 2022, and extended support ends on January 12, 2027. After that date Microsoft stops releasing security updates for it. The Datacenter license and the five user CALs stay valid, since they are perpetual, but an unpatched server is a security risk.
So who buys 2016 today? Mostly teams that need to license an existing 2016 host or keep an older line-of-business app running while they plan a move. Our article on Windows Server 2016 end of life lays out the options. For a new host, look at Windows Server 2025, supported until November 14, 2034. All 2016 products sit in the Windows Server 2016 category.

FAQ
How do I activate Windows Server 2016 Datacenter?
Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key and enter the key, or run slmgr /ipk with the key and then slmgr /ato. Evaluation installs convert with DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter.
Do I have to install or activate the user CALs?
No. Windows Server CALs are not entered into Windows and have no activation step. Keep the order email as your proof of license.
Can I use 2016 CALs to access a Windows Server 2019 or 2022 server?
No. A Windows Server CAL covers its own version and earlier ones, so 2016 CALs give access to Windows Server 2016 and older servers only.
Do these CALs cover Remote Desktop sessions?
No. Remote Desktop sessions need RDS CALs in addition to Windows Server CALs. The five user CALs cover services such as sign-in, file shares and printing.
What is the difference between a user CAL and a device CAL?
A user CAL covers one person on any number of devices. A device CAL covers one device, whoever uses it. User CALs fit staff with several devices.
Is Windows Server 2016 still supported?
Extended support ends on January 12, 2027. After that Microsoft stops releasing security updates, so plan a move to a newer version for long-term use.
