How to Test Your Keyboard

Takes about 30 seconds. Press a key, it turns green if it works.

Start with letters, move to numbers and function keys. Working keys light up green right away. Stats bar shows how many keys you tested. Keep going until you hit all the keys you actually use.

Try key combos too. Hold Shift and press a letter. Try Ctrl+C. Gamers should test W+A+S+D+Space together.

Key not lighting up? Press it a few more times. Still nothing? Probably broken or needs cleaning.

Some keys won’t work in browsers. Print Screen, Windows key, Fn combos get blocked by your OS. Grey keys on the virtual keyboard show which ones.

Keyboard Ghosting Test

Ghosting is when your keyboard drops some keypresses while others are held down. Big deal for gaming and fast typing.

To test: hold multiple keys at once. Check the “Pressed now” number. Holding 4 keys but counter shows 3? Your keyboard ghosts on that combo.

Common ghosting scenarios

  • Gaming movement: Hold W + A + Shift + Space. All four should show. Budget keyboards often fail this.
  • Fast typing: Type fast, watch for missing letters. Ghosting causes skipped keystrokes.
  • Shortcuts: Try Ctrl + Shift + Alt + a letter. Complex combos expose ghosting quick.

Key rollover explained

Key rollover = how many keys register at once.

  • 2KRO: Cheap keyboards. Only 2 keys at a time. Gaming will suffer.
  • 6KRO: Most USB keyboards. Works for regular use, complex combos might ghost.
  • NKRO: Mechanical and gaming boards. Every key works no matter how many you smash. Zero ghosting.

Buying a keyboard for gaming or coding? Look for NKRO or 6KRO minimum. Usually in the product specs.

When to Use a Keyboard Tester

Buying used keyboards: Test every key before you pay. Sellers skip mentioning dead keys all the time. 30 seconds of testing saves you from a bad buy.

Office IT work: Got 20 keyboards to check? Open this page, mash all keys, move on. What used to take hours now takes minutes.

After cleaning: Spilled something? Pulled keycaps off? Test everything when you put it back together. Keys sometimes don’t seat right.

Hardware vs software: Key works here but not in your app? Software problem. Doesn’t work here either? Hardware is dead.

New mechanical keyboards: Switches can be DOA out of the box. Test everything when it arrives. Return it while you still can.

Verify gaming specs: Box says NKRO? Prove it. Hold down as many keys as you can. Some “gaming” keyboards don’t live up to the hype.

FAQ

How do I test if my keyboard keys work?

Press any key. If it works, the matching virtual key goes green. Stats bar shows your progress. Keep pressing until you’ve tested what you need.

What is keyboard ghosting?

Press W, A, Space at the same time. If one doesn’t light up while the others do, that’s ghosting. Hardware limitation, not a broken key.

Why won’t some keys turn green?

Three reasons. Browser blocks Print Screen and Windows/Command keys (shown grey). Your OS might grab F1-F12 before this page sees them. Or the key is actually dead. If it’s not grey and doesn’t light up after multiple tries, clean it or replace it.

What is N-key rollover (NKRO)?

Every key registers no matter how many you press. 6KRO = 6 keys max. NKRO = no limit. Gaming and mechanical keyboards usually have NKRO. Cheap ones usually don’t.

Does this keyboard tester work on Mac?

Yes. Mac, Windows, Linux, Chromebook. Uses standard browser events. Your physical keyboard layout doesn’t matter.

How do I test my laptop keyboard?

Same way. Click somewhere on this page first so it’s focused. Laptop function keys sometimes need Fn held down. Try both with and without Fn.

Can I test wireless keyboards?

Yes. Works the same as wired. If keys aren’t registering, check batteries and connection. Move closer to the USB receiver if you’re using one.

My spacebar isn’t working. Now what?

Click on the page first to make sure it’s focused. Try pressing different spots on the spacebar since some have stabilizer problems. Still nothing? The switch under it might be shot. Mechanical keyboards let you swap individual switches.

How do I fix dead keys?

Pop off the keycap if you can. Blow out the junk with compressed air. Sticky? Cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol. Still dead? Switch is busted. Mechanical keyboard switches can be replaced. Membrane boards usually need full replacement.
