Nothing is uploaded. The video stays in this tab, and a snapshot is saved straight from your browser to your device.

This webcam test shows in seconds whether your camera works and what it really delivers: the live picture, the actual resolution, the measured frame rate and the aspect ratio. You can also save a snapshot as a PNG. The HypestKey webcam test runs in your browser, turns the camera on only after you press Start and uploads nothing.

How do I test my webcam online?

Open the webcam test, press Start camera and choose Allow in the browser prompt. If you see yourself in the preview, the webcam works. The panel then shows the real resolution, such as 1280 × 720, and the measured frame rate, such as 30 fps. Take a snapshot to check sharpness and color.

A black preview with numbers that keep updating usually means the lens is covered. No numbers at all means the camera did not start, and the message in the panel names the reason and the fix.

How to use the webcam test

  1. Close Zoom, Teams, Discord, OBS and other apps that might be using the camera.
  2. Press Start camera and choose Allow when the browser asks.
  3. If you have more than one camera, pick the right one in the Camera list.
  4. Choose a resolution in Ask for resolution to see what the camera can do, for example Full HD.
  5. Wait two seconds for the frame rate to settle, then read the numbers in the panel.
  6. Press Take snapshot, look at the picture and use Download snapshot to save it.
  7. Press Stop camera. The camera light should go off right away.

What resolution is my webcam?

The test reads the size of the frames the browser actually gets, so a “1080p” webcam that delivers 1280 × 720 shows 1280 × 720. Most laptop webcams give 1280 × 720 (0.9 megapixels), many USB webcams give 1920 × 1080 (2.1 MP), and 4K models give 3840 × 2160 (8.3 MP).

Name Resolution Megapixels Aspect ratio
VGA 640 × 480 0.31 4:3
HD (720p) 1280 × 720 0.92 16:9
Full HD (1080p) 1920 × 1080 2.07 16:9
QHD (1440p) 2560 × 1440 3.69 16:9
4K UHD (2160p) 3840 × 2160 8.29 16:9

The browser picks the camera mode closest to what the page asks for. That is why the test lets you ask for 640 × 480 up to 4K: if you ask for 4K and get 1920 × 1080, Full HD is the most this camera (or this browser) offers.

What is a good frame rate for a webcam?

30 fps is the standard for webcams and looks smooth in calls. 60 fps looks even smoother for streaming, but only some webcams offer it. Below about 18 fps motion looks choppy. The most common cause of a low frame rate is dim light: many webcams expose each frame longer in the dark, which cuts the frame rate.

Turn on a lamp in front of you and watch the number rise. Other causes are a busy USB hub, a slow USB 2.0 port for a 4K camera, or a heavy CPU load from other apps.

Why is my webcam not working?

Most often the browser or the system blocks access, another app holds the camera, or a privacy shutter covers the lens. Windows 11 and macOS both have a camera switch per app, browsers remember a “Block” choice per site, and many laptops have a camera key or a slider over the lens.

  • Access blocked (NotAllowedError): in Chrome or Edge, click the icon left of the address, open Site settings and set Camera to Allow. In Safari on a Mac, go to Safari → Settings → Websites → Camera.
  • Windows 11: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera. Turn on Camera access and Let desktop apps access your camera. Browsers count as desktop apps.
  • macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. Turn on your browser, then quit and reopen it.
  • No camera found (NotFoundError): check the USB cable and port, the camera key on the laptop, and Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Cameras in Windows 11.
  • Could not start (NotReadableError): another app is using the camera. Close call and streaming apps, or replug the webcam.

Is it safe to test a webcam online?

Yes, on this page. The HypestKey webcam test shows the video only inside your browser tab and sends nothing to a server: no video, no snapshot, no numbers. A snapshot goes straight from the browser to your downloads folder. The camera starts only when you press Start and stops when you press Stop or leave the page.

Your browser confirms it too: a camera icon appears in the tab or the address bar while any page uses the camera, and most webcams light an LED next to the lens.

How this tool works

When you press Start, the page asks for the camera with the browser’s getUserMedia function and the size you picked as an “ideal” value, so the camera falls back to its closest real mode. The resolution shown is the size of the decoded video frames (videoWidth × videoHeight), not the size the page asked for.

The frame rate is counted, not copied: the page counts the frames the browser presents during the last second with requestVideoFrameCallback, or by watching the video clock in browsers without that function. “Camera reports” is the mode the driver says it runs, so you can compare the promise with the real number. A snapshot draws the current frame onto a canvas at full resolution and saves it as a PNG through a local download link.

The limits: the browser sees what the driver hands over, so camera apps from the maker can sometimes reach modes a browser cannot. Picture quality (focus, noise, white balance) is for your eyes to judge in the snapshot. And the browser may lower the frame rate of a background tab, so keep this tab in front while you measure.

Why is my webcam image mirrored?

The preview is mirrored by default because people expect to see themselves as in a mirror. Other people in a call see you the right way round, with text reading normally. Click Mirror to switch the flip off; the snapshot follows the same setting, so turn mirroring off if you want to photograph a document.

FAQ

Why is my webcam showing a black screen?

The lens is covered, the camera is turned off or another app holds it. Check for a privacy slider over the lens or a camera key on the laptop keyboard, close Zoom, Teams and other camera apps, then press Start camera again. If the numbers update but the picture stays black, it is the shutter.

Why does my 1080p webcam show 1280 × 720?

The browser received 720p frames. Pick 1920 × 1080 in Ask for resolution; if it still shows 720p, the camera does not offer 1080p to the browser on this port. Try a USB 3 port, a shorter cable or another browser, and check the camera maker's app.

Does this webcam test record or save my video?

No. The video stays in your browser tab and nothing is sent to HypestKey or anyone else. Only a snapshot you take is saved, and only when you click Download snapshot, straight to your own device.

Why is the frame rate lower than 30 fps?

Usually because the room is dark: many webcams lengthen the exposure in low light and drop to 15 to 20 fps. Add light in front of you. A busy USB hub, a high resolution on a USB 2.0 port or a heavy CPU load can also lower it.

My webcam works here but not in Zoom or Teams. What should I do?

Open the app's video settings and choose the same camera as in the list here. Make sure no other app is using the camera at the same time, and that the app has camera access in Windows Settings → Privacy & security → Camera or in macOS Privacy & Security.

Can I test the camera on my phone?

Yes. Open the page in Safari or Chrome, press Start camera and choose Allow. The Camera list shows the front and back cameras, so you can check each one. On iPhone, camera access for Safari is in Settings → Apps → Safari → Camera.
