Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter License (5 CALs) is a Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter license bundled with five Windows Server client access licenses. Datacenter is the edition for virtualization hosts: one license covers up to two physical processors and an unlimited number of Windows Server virtual machines on that host. This Server 2012 R2 Datacenter CALs bundle from HypestKey suits legacy Hyper-V hosts, labs that mirror an older environment and apps that will not move to a newer release. Microsoft support has ended, so check the lifecycle section first.

Key takeaways

  • One Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter license plus five Windows Server CALs.
  • Up to two physical processors and unlimited Windows Server VMs per license.
  • The host can activate Windows Server 2012 R2 guests through AVMA.
  • Extended support ended October 10, 2023; paid ESU ended October 13, 2026.
  • Remote Desktop sessions need separate RDS CALs.

What is included in the Server 2012 R2 Datacenter CALs bundle?

The bundle includes a license for Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter and five Windows Server CALs. The server license activates the operating system on one host with up to two physical processors and licenses unlimited Windows Server virtual machines on it. The five CALs give five users or devices the right to access that server and its VMs.

Windows Server 2012 R2, released in November 2013, ships the full role set in Datacenter: Hyper-V with generation 2 VMs, live migration and Hyper-V Replica, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, IIS 8.5, Storage Spaces with tiering, Data Deduplication, Failover Clustering, Work Folders and Remote Desktop Services. Microsoft lists a memory limit of 4 TB.

Already own CALs? Then the Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter key without CALs is the leaner order.

How do the 5 Windows Server CALs work?

A Windows Server CAL gives one user or one device the right to use the services of a licensed Windows Server, such as domain sign-in, file shares or printing. With five CALs, five users or five devices are covered. On a Datacenter host, those CALs also cover access to the Windows Server VMs running on it.

Which type fits you? User CALs suit people who each work from a PC, a laptop and a phone. Device CALs suit shared machines used by several people in shifts. Small teams usually go with user CALs.

  • Not entered in Windows: standard Windows Server CALs are a license right; Windows does not ask for a CAL key. Keep your HypestKey email as the record.
  • Version rule: the CAL must be the same version as the server or newer. Windows Server 2012 CALs cover 2012 R2 too, because Microsoft released no separate R2 CALs.
  • Remote Desktop: full desktop or RemoteApp sessions need RDS CALs in addition.

Datacenter or Standard: which 2012 R2 edition do I need?

In Windows Server 2012 R2, Datacenter and Standard have identical roles and features and both cover up to two physical processors per license. Datacenter licenses unlimited Windows Server VMs on the host and acts as an AVMA host. Standard licenses two VMs per license. Hosts with three or more VMs usually come out ahead on Datacenter.

Item 2012 R2 Datacenter (this bundle) 2012 R2 Standard
Roles and features Full set Full set (identical)
Processors per license Up to 2 Up to 2
Virtual machines per license Unlimited 2
AVMA host for guest VMs Yes No
Maximum RAM 4 TB 4 TB
Best fit Hyper-V hosts with many VMs Physical servers, light virtualization

One physical server with a single role? The Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (5 CALs) bundle covers it with the same five CALs.

How does AVMA activate guest VMs?

Automatic Virtual Machine Activation lets an activated Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Hyper-V host activate its guest VMs without contacting Microsoft. The host activates Windows Server 2012 R2 guests in Datacenter, Standard or Essentials edition. Guests on Windows Server 2016 or newer need a host with the same or a newer version.

  1. Activate the host with your Datacenter key and add the Hyper-V role.
  2. Create the VM, install Windows Server 2012 R2 and leave the Data Exchange integration service enabled.
  3. Inside the VM, run slmgr /ipk with Microsoft’s public AVMA key for the guest edition.
  4. The VM activates at start-up, even without internet access.

Source: Microsoft Learn, Automatic Virtual Machine Activation, which also lists the AVMA keys. The host logs activations with Event ID 12310, the guest with Event ID 12309.

What hardware does Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter need?

Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter needs at least a 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor, 512 MB of RAM, 32 GB of disk space and a Gigabit Ethernet adapter. These minimums only cover setup. A Hyper-V host needs enough cores and RAM for every guest plus the host itself, and storage fast enough for all VMs at once.

Component Microsoft minimum
Processor 1.4 GHz 64-bit
Memory 512 MB (allocate more than 800 MB to a VM during setup)
Disk 32 GB system partition
Network Gigabit (10/100/1000baseT) Ethernet adapter
Display Super VGA 1024 x 768 or higher

How do I activate Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter?

Open an elevated Command Prompt, run slmgr /ipk with your key and then slmgr /ato. You can also use Control Panel > System and Security > System and select Change product key. If the server has no internet access, run slui 4 to activate by phone. The CALs need no activation.

  1. Install Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter (Server with a GUI or Server Core).
  2. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  3. Run slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX with the key from your HypestKey email.
  4. Run slmgr /ato and check the status with slmgr /dlv.
  5. Currently on Standard or an evaluation copy? Run DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula and restart.

Each step of the edition change is in our guide to activating Windows Server with DISM.

Tip: Activate the host before building guest VMs. AVMA works only when the Datacenter host itself reports Licensed.

Is Windows Server 2012 R2 still supported?

No. Microsoft ended extended support for Windows Server 2012 R2 on October 10, 2023. Paid Extended Security Updates through Azure or volume licensing continued for three years and ended on October 13, 2026. Since then no security updates exist for any 2012 R2 edition, Datacenter included.

Running 2012 R2 in 2026 is a containment job. Keep the host off the open internet, behind a firewall, with few admin accounts and good backups, and plan the move to a supported release. Run slmgr /ipk with your key in an elevated Command Prompt, then slmgr /ato. Without internet access, run slui 4 and activate by phone.

How many virtual machines does the Datacenter license cover?

An unlimited number of Windows Server VMs on the licensed host, which may have up to two physical processors. A four-socket host needs two licenses.
